NAMFREL
participates in EU forum on domestic election observation
in
Brussels, Belgium
Upon the invitation of the European Union, NAMFREL
Membership Committee Chair Mr. Damaso Magbual, and Special Projects Committee
Chair Ms. Corazon Ignacio, participated in the Forum on Enhancing EU Support to
Domestic Election Observers, held on July 14 and 15 in Brussels, Belgium. The
aims of the forum were to identify how the EU can improve its technical support
and collaboration with domestic observer groups, and to provide a platform for
dialogue and peer learning among international observer groups. The forum was
attended by 88 participants from 87 election monitoring organizations coming
from 66 countries.
.
In the forum, NAMFREL was recognized as the oldest election
monitoring organization (EMO) in the world. In a presentation, Mr.
Patrick Merlowe of the National Democratic Institute said that NDI's
engagement in election observation missions all over the world took
its inspiration from NAMFREL's accomplishment during the 1986 snap
presidential elections. He also mentioned that after 1986,
organizations in Asia, Africa, and Latin America requested NDI to
fund their trips to the Philippines to study NAMFREL, or to invite
NAMFREL people as consultants and mentors in the start-up of their
election monitoring projects. .
